記念パッケージの発売時期には例年話題に挙がっていますが、今年もウルティマ オンラインの誕生日が9月24日である旨が示されました。この日付をWilkiが示したのは2004年なのですが未だに様々なサイトで諸説が掲載されているため、混乱しているプレイヤーもいるようです。

ウルティマ オンラインのベータテストが終了したのが9月23日のことだ。初回限定版を予約して深夜配達を依頼したプレイヤーの多くは9月25日までパッケージを受け取れなかったはずだが、サーバー自体は9月24日の段階で立ち上げられており、いち早くパッケージを手に入れたプレイヤーが少人数だがログインしていた。したがって、この日こそがウルティマ オンラインが公式に旗揚げされた日付となるね。

ウルティマ オンラインの誕生日は発売に基づいているのだが、その実際の発売日が曖昧になっているようだね。
ベータテストが終了した日なのだろうか？
それは9月23日の事だ。
直送版が発送された日なのだろうか？
それは9月23日に包装され、9月24日に発送されたんだ。
店頭販売版が発送された日なのだろうか？
それは9月26日の事だ。
ウェブ上では9月30日としているサイトを数多く見かけるが、検索サイトを活用すれば9月26日時点で直送版を入手し、ログインして遊んだ人達がいるという十分な証拠がある。私の友人には9月23日と記載されたオリジナルの郵送印紙を持っている人がおり、更に最初のサーバーが9月24日段階で起動していたという事を教えてくれた。9月23日に包装され、9月24日に発送されたとすれば、夜間郵送を指定していた人は9月25日時点で受け取れていたはずだ。勿論、夜間郵送といったオプションがあったし、近場に住んでいた事により更に早い時期に受け取れた人もいる事だろう。
今週調査できる事を確認してみよう。発売期の古い投稿を読み返すのは楽しかったね。中には「ウルティマ オンラインの採算には5万人の加入者が必要とするが、その実行にはペンティアム166Mhzと36MBを必要とするからあり得そうもない。したがってウルティマ オンラインは破綻する運命にあるよ」と言う人々もいたね。
数多くの議論が繰り返され、今我々はその７年後にいる。
私は微笑む以外ないのだが、このような歴史あるものの一端を担える事を幸運に感じているよ。
Is it the day the Beta ended? (23rd)
Is it the date the Charter Editions were shipped? (packed on the 23rd, shipped on the 24th)
Is it the day the retail versions were shipped? (26th)
I see a lot of September 30th dates on the web, but there is enough evidence from my google searches to prove that people had the Charter Edition and were logged in and playing by the 26th. I even have a friend who has an original packing bill that has Sep 23rd on it. He also has some information that the first servers were turned on sometime on Sep 24th. Assuming that the boxes were packed on the 23rd, and shipped the 24th, anyone who ordered with overnight shipping should have had them on the 25th. Of course, that depends on if overnight was even an option, and also we have to take into account those people who were able to get copies early because they had access to the earlier stages of the distribution channel.
I'll see what else I can find out this week at work. I'll tell you one thing, going back and reading all the old usenet posts from around release time was entertaining. People saying that UO would need 50,000 subscribers to break even, and that was highly unlikely since not that many people would have the P-166 and 36mb needed to run UO, so it was doomed to fail. ;-)
And lots and lots of arguing... and here we are 7 years later, and the conversation really hasn't changed all that much!
I can't help but to smile, and also to feel extremely lucky to be a part of something with such a storied past.
