2Dクライアントとは，ウルティマ オンラインで利用可能なクライアントのうち，サービス開始当初に提供されたもの及びその拡張版の総称。拡張版第三の夜明け以後に登場した新しい系統のクライアント群と対比して呼ばれる。Classic Client あるいは Legacy Client とも呼ばれることがある。

我々が把握すべきは，新規プレイヤーが2Dクライアントを利用するに至る経緯であろう。これには幾つかの仮説を提示することができる。
1. ステイジアン・アビスクライアントは依然としてベータ版であること。我々は着実に正式なサービス開始に向けて開発を進めているところだが，充分な準備なしに正式な稼働は控えたいと考えている。
2. 新規プレイヤーを招き入れた友人が，2Dクライアントの利用を勧めること。これはプレイヤー自身の問題だ。既存のプレイヤーは2Dクライアントに慣れ親しんでいることだろうが，果たして新規プレイヤーが利用するクライアントとして最良の選択であろうか。おそらくそうではないだろう。
3. 新規プレイヤーのパソコンではステイジアン・アビスクライアントを利用できないこと。ウルティマ オンラインの開発者として，我々が真摯に向き合わねばならぬ課題であろう。多くの人々はゲーム用ではない旧式のパソコンにおいてウルティマ オンラインであれば動作可能であるとの理由からプレイしている。これはウルティマ オンラインにとって有利に働くことではある。2Dクライアントは全てのレンダリングをソフトウェア上で処理しており，グラフィックカードの拡張機能は一切活用していないため，旧式のパソコンでも動作可能なのだ。しかし，ステイジアン・アビスクライアントはグラフィックカードの拡張機能を活用していることから，動作すること自体できないパソコンも存在しよう。

2Dクライアントは，そう，古すぎるのだ。そして，新たな機能の追加が非常に困難でもある。ステイジアン・アビスクライアントは，小規模な調整や変更を柔軟に行えるよう設計されたものだ。
我々は2Dクライアントを見限ったわけではなく，新しい機能を両クライアントへ追加しようと努力している。しかし，2Dクライアントへ導入するために要する時間が効果に見合わぬこともあるのだ。
ゲーム開発とは，リスクや利益性と常に隣り合わせである。我々は投資効果を最大化させ得るように時間配分せねばならない。もしも，ステイジアン・アビスクライアントを利用する価値を見出し，利用できる環境にあるのであれば試してほしい。

Well the question we should ask is why are these players going with the Classic Client. I can think of a few reasons:
1. The Enhanced Client is still in "Beta" - We are slowly working towards getting the client to a point where we can consider it officially released. We don't want to do this until we are sure its ready.
2. Their friend who got them to try it said the Classic Client is better - This is up to you guys. You might like the Classic Client better because you are used to it, but is it really the best client for a truly new player to use? Probably not.
3. Their machine can't handle the Enhanced Client - A reality we have to face as UO developers is that many people play our game because it runs so well on older computers and computers that are not meant for gaming. It actually give us an advantage over other online games. Since the Classic Client renders the entire game entirely in software (without the use of a graphics card) it runs great on these machines. However, the Enhanced Client makes extensive use of your graphics card and some computers simply won't be able to run it well.

The answer here is pretty simple.
The Classic Client is... well its old. And very difficult to add new features to. The Enhanced Client is designed in such a way that it is very simple for us to make minor modifications and improvements.
We definitely haven't abandoned the Classic Client. We will still put every effort in to add these new features to both clients, but sometimes the amount of time it would take to implement them in the Classic Client just isn't worth it.
Game development is a constant risk vs. reward analysis. We want to spend our time on things that will get us the "most bang for the buck".
If you are seeing features in the Enhanced Client that you like and your computer can handle it, maybe you should give it another shot.
6月28日（木）から正式サービスが開始された「甦りし王国」に続き、 ロースペックのマシンでもお楽しみいただける従来の2Dクライアントの無料ダウンロードが本日7月10日（火）よりスタートいたしました。
